MESS- FREE GEAR LUBE CHANGE

One thing I have learned by trial and error is that if you need to change the gear lube in your differential (and probably transmission) you are almost guaranteed that you will make a big mess.  There is no way to get that bottle of gear lube anywhere near the fill hole without making a mess using the average home mechanic grade tools.

Facing that challenge after changing the pinion seal on Mr. Hyde I devised a method of filling the differential by putting the gear lube bottle in an IV type holder and letting it simply drain into the differential through an vinyl hose.  I used a 3/8" ID hose and routed it over the gas tank, between the rear-end, and into the filler hole.  The result was not one drop on the floor, or in the tub waiting to catch the mess.  Since the differential holds exactly the amount of gear lube in the container there is no need to check the lube level in the differential.

The bottle is suspended from above by a length of wire basket made from thin wire.  I used aviation safety wire to build the basket.  The gear lube bottle is placed in the basket so that the bottle hangs upside down.  Then I trimmed the pointed cap and forced the hose onto the tapered bottle tip.  Once the hose is connected I pressed 4 holes in the bottom of the bottle with a sharp object such as a nail or center punch to allow air to enter the bottle and allow the fluid to flow into the hose.

Once the lube bottle is empty I put an air hose blower into the vinyl hose and blew the remaining lube in the hose into the differential using about 15 pounds of air pressure.
