SHASTA MEET - 2008

Day 1 - The Coast

While the Shasta meet is usually held on the second Saturday of July, many people show up on Friday to meet with Phyllis get their dinner tickets and schedule packages.  On Friday afternoon the Coast is held at Shastice Park,  The Coast consists of a short straight run with a target at the far end.  The judges hang a surveyor's weight on the front bumper and the driver moves the car and then releases the clutch and allows the car to coast to a stop.  The car that brings the surveyor's weight closest to the center of the target is deemed the winner.  Friday evening provides a time to socialize, meet with friends, and make new friends.  Unfortunately my long work hours left me too tired to enjoy the evening this year.  Next year I will allow more time to rest before I leave for Shasta.

A welcome find during the Coast was Keith Williams making fantastic home-made ice cream for one and all to enjoy.  Keith has built an ice cream maker by taking a manual ice cream churn and turning the crank through a couple of pulleys powered by a Maytag washing machine gasoline motor from the 1930's

On the right side of the wagon is the Maytag washing machine motor.  For those of you who are not familiar with these gems, your grandmother, or great grandmother used this motor to wash their clothes.

There was no shortage of people willing to test Keith's skills at making ice cream.  All would agree, he has mastered the art.
